On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Indian Department of Consumer Affairs said they would soon constitute a committee to develop the right to overhaul the law framework.

The committee is headed by Additional Secretary, Consumer Affairs, Nidhi Khare; Its other members include industry bodies and stakeholders, including the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), and as well as various Indian consumer activists and organizations.

The ministry said the committee identified mobile phones, tablets, laptops, consumer durables, automobiles, and agriculture as key sectors for the infrastructure.

In addition to this, the ministry also shared some key points that the committee discussed in its meeting. The ministry said that in the meeting, they found that consumer electronics companies should provide full knowledge about products and access to manuals, and software updates should not limit product transparency in software license sales.

The ministry also said that parts and equipment of service equipment – including those needed for diagnostics – should be made available to third parties as well as individuals. “Fortunately, in India, there exists a vibrant repair service sector and third party repair, which includes cannibalizing products to provide spare parts for the circular economy,” it added.

The new right to repair law framework will very helpful to Indian consumers and third-party buyers and sellers. The committee also said that the move could help reduce the country’s e-waste generation and create many new jobs.

Further, the ministry said: Once this law is rolled out in India, it will become a game-changer for the sustainability of the products and serve as a catalyst for employment generation.

The main point that the Ministry added: Over time, it has been observed that the right to repair is getting severely restricted, and not only are there significant delays in repairs, but many times, the products are repaired at exorbitantly high prices. Is. The users who once bought the product are rarely given a choice by the company.
